Trees and more
While we are all laying low these days we just want to say thank you to a few people for jobs done in the past few weeks and give a little update.
Trees at School
Thank you to Frank Brennan who, back in February, did a great job taking out the large leylandii trees that were in front of the school. The school building is now visible from the road and looking good. There is more light and space in the school grounds and it looks great from the carpark. Thank you very much to Frank for his hard work and well done to Mr. O Fearghail and Fr. Patrick for organising this.
Orchards
Our new fruit trees are beginning to bud - it is great to see the beginning of what will hopefully be community orchards providing fruit to eat and share. Thanks to Alex McDermott who got used bicycle tubes from Feel Good Bicycles in Virginia and Collinstown Action Group bought tree protectors for some of the trees that were being damaged by rabbits. Our trees have been tied up and where needed the protectors have been put around them.
Kilpatrick Clean Up
Well done to The Brennans and The Costellos who are doing social distancing a clean up in Kilpatrick. It is great to see this kind of initiative taking place in an area, safely and with such enthuasism. They hope to gather all the rubbish that is littering their beautiful part of the country and will bring it to the dump. Well done and thank you from us all.
Kerbing at the Corner
Thank you to Westmeath County Council who put in kerbing to finish off the side of of the road and sowing grass seed at the entrance to the road for the Lough Lene Gaels Pitch.
Wildflowers beside the recycling bins
We planted a very small test wildflower patch last year beside the glass recycling bins. It didn't flower as we would have hoped. This week the Duffy girls planted more wildflower seeds there, along with some grass seed, in the hope that we will have a little wildflower patch there in the coming weeks. The daffodils and tulips planted nearby are looking good though and the snowdrops and crocus were lovely and will be back again next year.
Collinstown Action Group and Collinstown Tidy Towns will not be organising clean up days in the coming weeks obviously. But everyone can help by picking up litter if you see it. The great work going on in all the gardens around the village on a daily basis will really add to the beauty of the village for the summer and beyond. Each flower bed tended, each pollinator friendly plant planted, each wall and gate painted during this Covid time when we are all staying at home will make a big difference to the beauty of our village.
