Great work done at The Cut, Lough Lene
We all know how lucky we are to have Lough Lene on our doorstep, even if we can't get to it at the minute to admire it's beauty.
Great work has been happening down at The Cut so we thought we'd update you. Prior to the current Covid restrictions Collinstown Action Group had been working on organising a clean up of The Cut. We contacted Westmeath County Council with some suggestions for work that needed to be done around the area and are delighted to see that a lot of this, and some additional items have been done. The barriers in the carpark have been powerwashed. There are new bins. The old benches near the toilet block have been repaired and varnished. And, most noticeably, the toilet and changing room facilities have been painted inside and out. We would like to say a huge thank you to Westmeath County Council for all their great work at The Cut in recent weeks.
Hopefully it will be safe to move around a bit more soon and we will all be able to go for a social distancing walk down at Lough Lene soon. When you do go there, remember that dogs are not allowed in past the gates at The Cut and please ensure you use the bins responsibly or take home your rubbish. Leave No Trace.
Earlier this year we had been working with Basil Mannion from the Local Authority Water and Communities Office and were planning a Water Quality Event which was due to take place in May at The Cut. This event has been postponed but we will get round to it when it is safe to do so. This idea was to start with a litter pick and mini clean up and then to have a talk from Aquatic Ecologist Ross Macklin about the water quality in our lake and about the biodiversity in and around The Cut.
We had also been hoping to plant some wildflower seeds along the wall inside to bring some colour to that area. This work is on hold due to Covid 19 restrictions but we will see what can be achieved in accordance with guidelines in the coming weeks.
